General News

  • Yes, we all know that paganism (real polytheistic worship) is on the rise, especially in places like Europe.  Well, now the old Greek gods of Bulfinch's Mythology are being worshiped again today.  The Guardian has an interesting article about those today who worship the thunderbolt hurling Zeus and the faithful God of the sun Apollo.
  • Superbowl parties at churches can now legally go forward due to a clarification given by the NFL.  I think the use the really big screens was a problem and even that looks to be OK now.  I remember doing SuperBowl parties with college students and we would show a half-time video with Christian testimonies.  We always had to "turn off the game" then we could share the gospel.  Then, we would stop the message, and then "turn back on the game."  It is goofy that the NFL even tries to control these things.  But alas, we tried to play by the rules.  Article at WorldNet Daily.  Apparently someone put together a video saying that the church has prohibited either team from using a "Hail Mary" at the end of the game.  Too funny.

Still seems a bit iffy to me about the Super Bowl parties (although I am going to the one at my church). I would imagine that the average person does not have a data projector in their home.

Further, as my wife pointed out, although the NFL says they don't want any kind of message associated with the game, they are perfectly content to sell ads with messages about alcohol consumption and worse.

As for the new version of Office, I got two free copies at the Microsoft Live Event held in Louisville earlier this week. It is nice, and I installed it in Parallels on my Mac. You may or may not have noticed that it runs considerably slower than previous versions of Office, although mileage may vary based on processor speed and RAM.

The good news for Mac users is that our new version of MS Office will be out around June or July, tentatively called MS Office 2008. Generally, the Mac and Windows versions leap frog each other, with each taking the best of the earlier versions new features. So the Mac is not out of this game; rather it will get something a bit more polished later in the year.

By the way, if you're doing a lot of academic writing for school, you should really check out Mellel, a Mac-only word processor that is much better designed for academic writing. www.mellel.com

Reid, I notice you never allowed my earlier comment on this post.

Anyway, here's a second one. I saw a review of Office 2007 today that says that this version is the most MAC-LIKE ever! Thought you might appreciate that.
