There is a very good discussion taking place surrounding the nature of Jesus and Paul's teaching on Divorce in the New Testament. Much of it has followed an article in Christianity Today by David Instone-Brewer on divorce which is a summary of his recent work on the subject. John Piper, who many do not know holds a PhD in New Testament, responded to Instone-Brewer and others such as NT scholar Andreas Köstenberger have weighed in as well. Here is a summary of the articles and blog entry's
- What God has Joined - What the Bible Really Teaches about Divorce by David Instone-Brewer
- Tragically Widening the Grounds of Legitimate Divorce by John Piper
- John Piper corrects misconceptions about my Christianity Today article by David Instone-Brewer
- Clarifying the NT Teaching on Divorce by Andreas Köstenberger

I have thought a lot about my parent's divorce and whether or not it was right. It took me a long time to realize that even with all the stuff that makes it feel right to justify a divorce, it's not only wrong but undesirable. God reconciles and heals. Many people doubt the power of God to heal in situations where there is completely unjustifiable harm committed toward them. The prevailing attitude towards divorce in Christendom does not aid in ushering someone into that healing. The truth is God is able to heal people from the pain of adultery and even neglect or even worse- not to lessen the seriousness of them. We do not readily offer that to those who are considering divorce.
Props to JP for defending a "non-traditional?" interpretation.
