Just when you thought it could not get any better on this July 11th, iPhone 3G day, a day that new Apple idolators were born. A new accessory arrived unexpectedly. The iPhone videoconferencing kit!
More information available at Gizmodo - when looking at this, you may even see how to mod your iPhone for videoconferencing with products found in any household bathroom.

I was in line this morning at the local AT&T store. I got the phone but as of now it remains a brick. I hope it works when I get home. Curse you, iTunes authentication server!

Seriously John...that sucks. I heard there were all sorts of activation problems today.
Let me know how you like it. I still like a keyboard I think...and not too excited about AT&T. Internet and iPod look extremely killer on this thing though.
Take care

Agree on the hater part... Sooner or later Reid will come around. As soon as logos is out for the mac. Hope you guys are well, Reid!

It's working fine now. I was able to authenticate when I got home last night. It is light years better than the Treo 680 I was using. The ability to attach to WiFi networks is great, the 3G network is substantially faster than GPRS, and all of the applications are great. The mail app is actually better than using Outlook proper, imo.

Cool John - let me know how it goes.
You hatas here do know that 3G data has been on cell phones for years right? And GPS...with Cut/Copy/Paste, with replaceable batteries, good cameras etc?
I do think the iPhone is one of the best iPods and the very best mobile web experience. Yet for heavy e-mail/messaging...I'm not so sure. I have typed on these and found it horrible - but I hear "you get used to it" after six months or so.
Anyway, not a hater - Mac people always take the bate and provide me with good entertainment. They are so sure of their superiority in all things - they just need to tell you all the time. Love live Steve!

Typing has not been an issue for me thus far. The browsing experience is great. I wish it were firefox, but since it's an Apple device that may be asking too much :-)
I do a lot of email and it has not been a problem, but then I don't compose long emails on my phone either. Anything that requires that much thought and typing is ill-served by a message from a phone anyway, to me.
I can unhesitatingly recommend it as an upgrade from my Treo 680 (the Palm O/S is a dinosaur), which was on AT&T and nonetheless did not have 3G speed.
In fact, the worst part about the iPhone is that it is with AT&T, but the three year exclusivity period runs out in about 2 years, when my contract will be conveniently expired and I can move to whatever carrier I choose.
The $160.00 premium over two years is a trivial complaint, really, because of the improved service.
Of course, I still use Vista/Ubuntu and not OS/X, so I am no Apple junkie yet. Frankly, the price premium for their laptops is ridiculous.

John Jenkins is an open minded techophile. He mentioned Apple, Vista, iPhone, Ubuntu and Palm in the same post. Oh that we had more like him for the madness to end.
Yeah, I agree, AT&T is the worse thing about the iPhone. I don't know that we will ever see a CDMA version though - that would mean Apple and Verizon would have to make friendly.
I have gotten so quick on my Centro keyboard, perhaps as haptic feedback improves touch keyboards will become more amicable to me.

The typing is surprisingly good. The only issue I have had so far is that it likes to correct technical terms or game terms into normal words which is not what I always mean, but for normal emails and texts it is spot on.
As an aside, I might be going to OU starting this spring to get my CS degree. It's time to turn the technophilia into a profession, instead of a sidelight (if I can find a way to combine it with law, I will be golden).

OK, now I'm jealous :) I think it is great to get a CS degree. I so enjoyed that world in college. Tech law is going to be more and more important - to be able to ride both sides...real technical knowledge and an understanding of shaping, forming the law. Sounds very cool.
I wish I had time to be more than just a tech enthusiast...but other things call.
Now can you figure out why the iPhone can't cut/copy/paste? I use this all the time on my phone, computer etc. I am guessing the touch interface doesn't have an elegant way (gesture, etc) to select text, access some sort of context menu...
Anyway, glad it is working well for you.
