Christoga - What the...

OK, I was baited into this one by a good friend whose PR department would not permit him to blog it...and he figured I would be his huckleberry.  Well, he guessed correctly.  Christoga - a nice combination of YOGA and Christ - or is it?  Now, I happen to have some dear friends who are committed Christians who were converted from Hinduism.  It is interesting that Indian people who become followers of Jesus typically call poses dedicated to certain eastern gods...well...idolatry.  Not us western, Oprah Winfrey watching, syncretism loving "Christians." We like our bodies to be filled with Yoga and our hearts with some person we vaguely call "Jeeezus."

Now, I am not going to get into a debate here on whether stretching is bad - of course it is not.  Of course Yoga type stretching increases flexibility, strength and can make your body healthier.  Yet if you want to stretch you do not need "Christoga" to do so.  You certainly do not need yoga to "worship Jesus." Also, "getting centered" and eastern meditation are the antithesis of seeking the peace of God through meditation upon God's works, his Word and his attributes.  Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46)...this is the result of something Yoga cannot offer, a relationship with the creator God who is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble...yet we love to grab cool eastern stuff and mix it up without even knowing what it means.

OK, all the Yoga loving Christians can now send me your kind, loving, tolerant comments...

I love the cross, but will keep my iPod

I am really not so sure why we take an ancient instrument of execution upon which God incarnate gave his life in sacrifice for sin and make it into trinkets.  Here is another installment in the history of Jesus Junk - a Cross shaped MP3 player. I guess this is supposed to make a statement but I do not know what statement. Here is how this one was reported on Engadget:

Good lord. No, really. Good lord. The TEO MP-301 MP3 player from IceTech USA crams 1GB of media storage into -- as you can see -- a very Jesus-friendly form factor. The $49 player features a built-in microphone with voice recorder, mirrored front panel, and even a little speaker. According to reviews, the player has some serious interface issues and a weak screen, but if crucifixion is your thing, you can't go wrong with this necklace cross-cum-MP3 player. Or is that the other way around? Is this an MP3 player that's also a cross? Anyway, there you have it: the cross-shaped MP3 player, indeed.

My small counsel to the kind souls which produce this sort of thing - STOP IT.  OK, now podcasts of Christ centered preaching are really great on iPods.  That is how I would rather experience "Cross" and "MP3 player" in the same sentence.  But maybe its just me...

Blog Madness 2008 - Vote POCBlog

DateMarch 26, 2008
Comments3 Comments

OK, some of the men over at Said at Southern have created a sort of NCAA tournament for blogs associated with Southern Seminary.  The POCBlog was included and received enough votes to make it out of round one.  Now it has come to the second round and it has gotten a bit crazy.  I think the 50.00 gift certificate to an online bookstore has fired up the theology book guys.

So, I decided to do my own, very public, shameless plug.  Here is what you need to do.

  • Go to this web site and vote for POC - we are in the South Division
  • Vote, then get your family members to vote - your spouse, each of your children - you need not be a land owner to vote
  • Then put it out to all your friends on Facebook and MySpace - ask all of them vote
  • Then send it to any e-mail list you have - have all those people vote

It is time to hear the roar of the POCBlog - men and women - let's get to work.  There is great power to create real change.  Not convinced?

Top Ten Reasons to vote POCBlog

1. Help out the minority - almost all the other guys are Baptists
2. Stand with the POCBlog - we are a family here - a family that votes together, stays together
3. I know how to apply UFC fighting techniques
4. Owen Strachan once called this blog "punchy" - it is time to punch back
5. Support Reid's addictive book buying habits
6. Every vote for the POCBlog saves a kitten...and that kitten will get to go to heaven
7. Jesus loves you
8. Because Friends are friends forever if the Lord's the Lord of them
9. If that song makes you sick - go do something about it - vote Power of Change
10. My kids want me to win - they will cry if I loose - you don't want to make my kids cry - please vote on behalf of Kayla, Kylene and Thomas Reid

New Developments in the Church of Steve Jobs

DateMarch 19, 2008

Today there was a surprise announcement from the Temple of Mac in Cupertino.  High Priest Steve Jobs has done something unprecedented - he has allocated some of his priestly duties to another.  Upon hearing of the recent dedication of one MacIdolator Jobs himself investigated this paragon of devotion.  Upon obtaining precise details of the supereragatory act, Jobs announced that Charlie Rose would be named Associate High Priest of the Church of Appletology.  MacIdolators have been rejoicing with light beer and spontaneous iPhone calling and texting.  They were, however, unable to text the photos of Rose to one another due to technical limitations.  Job's announcement was brief but to the point:

If anyone would give up their face for the new AIR, and he makes a living being on TV where people look at his face, this sort of dedication has not been seen before in the annals of Mac history.  Rose's sacramentalism, to receive bodily pain in order to continue to receive grace from his AIR has touched all of us in the Mac economy worldwide.  We do hope and pray that his influence would be deep and wide in our community.

Rose refused to comment.  Insiders said that he always knew he was called to be a prophet and that his AIR save was out of calling, not self promotion.  Unrevealed sources say the only real statement obtained from Rose has been: Don't make me a hero, it was just the right thing to do. Full news of Rose's amazing, self-denying act may be found here.

White People and St. Patrick's Day

In case you missed the wonderful dicussions yesterday concerning St. Patrick's day, one more bit of information has come to my attention.  It seems St. Patty's day is something that all white people like. This wonderful piece of satire begins like this:

Normally if someone were to wake up at 7:00 in the morning, take the day off work, and get drunk at a bar before 10:00 a.m., they would be called an alcoholic, and not in the artistic, edgy way that white people are so fond of.

On March 17th, however, this exact same activity is called celebrating St. Patrick’s day. This very special white holiday recognizes Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who helped to bring Catholicism to the Emerald Isle. His ascetic life is celebrated every year by white people drinking large amounts of Irish-themed alcohol and listening to the Dropkick Murphys.

Read the rest here. BTW, my ancestors were Irish folk who came to America due to harsh realities in the motherland - so don't hate...just laugh.  And if you are not Baptist tip a Guinness (just one though sinner) for me.

OK - sometimes people's thinking is so ridiculous, off the wall and sad that it demands mockery.  In this case, it is also very funny...and sad.  I have received this video through e-mail several times over the last few days and have sent it on to many pastor friends...today I decided that the POCBlog reader might enjoy.

A couple of pre-thoughts.  Did this guy not know that verse and chapter numbers were "added to" the writings of the Bible and not part of the inspired writings? His application of what this wonderful phrase means also is quite ridiculous. I have nothing but pity for his "this is what's wrong with our country bit" - but when he starts railing on the NIV and NKJV editors I just lose it...so the best thing to do is just laugh.

One reminder...Passion without reason and the Bible without any care of context can be dangerous things...

Hillary and Kangaroos Feeling it...

Some interesting news stories today on the web. First of all, contrary to some Republican's views, Hillary Clinton does seem to have emotions:

At a campaign event in Portsmouth, Clinton choked up and grew uncharacteristically emotional as she talked about her reasons for seeking the presidency in the November election.

I feel bad as I am listening to Barak Obama's audio book right now...the audacity!  Full story story here about the goings on in New Hampshire.  And no, this blog will not be commenting on "the elections." I'll let you pick your own sources for that.

Second, apparently some people in Australia are a bit upset about the new published guidelines for the humane killing of a Joey - also known as a baby Kangaroo.  Here are a few excerpts whose rhetoric I just found odd.

Australian animal protection groups questioned on Monday a new government guide for the humane killing of kangaroos which recommends "forcefully swinging" the heads of young animals against a vehicle tow bar.

....

"These changes are basically saying the federal government believes it's okay to blast a defenseless joey to bits with a shotgun," Pat O'Brien, President of the Wildlife Protection Association, told local newspapers.

....

The draft national code aims to guide people on humane disposal of orphaned joeys, which live in their mothers' pouches, after the parent has either been shot or hit by a vehicle. The code rejected sending orphaned joeys to wildlife careers.

....

"I think we all love kangaroos. The problem is that there are too many. What we are talking about here is responsible environmental management, because if we don't do something you won't have pastures and viable farming," an Environment Department spokesman said.

Yikes, do something...like bash the little guys and shoot em with a shot gun?  I guess the headline says it all: Kangaroo killing code draws flak from animal groups

Should we laugh or cry? I won't say which I did...poor Joeys.

Some of you know that we have a crusade in favor of reading going on at Inversion. It manifests itself in several ways. I found this video to be very helpful in the cause...

Yes, if you have ever participated in the "mattress chuck" or the "ugly butt-crack contest" you need no hypothetical questions from Jeff Foxworthy to confirm your identity.  Oh, yes - welcome to the wonderful world of The Texas Redneck Games.  A few noteworthy quotes.

By the time the latest Redneck Games ended Sunday, more than 54 arrests and citations had been issued on charges ranging from public intoxication to speeding, according to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department. Officials are considering charges against the organizer and landowners where the event was held.

Modeled after similar games that have been going in Georgia for more than a decade, the four-day Redneck Games took place about 70 miles southeast of Dallas and included an estimated 6,000 people and live music.

A few ideas for some new games:

  • The beer can pyramid motocross jumping competition
  • The greased armadillo toss (PETA, this is a joke)
  • The best mustache competition (women's and men's divisions)

What games would you like to see included?

Emerging Church - Poster Wars...

It seems that there is a bit of a poster banter going on in the blog world.

First up was the Pyro's - Emergent-See Motivational Poster's for Emerging Christians.  Based on the popular "Motivational" and "De-Motivator" poster genre, the Pyromaniacs smack a few straw men, but in good fun nonetheless.  A few of them I actually found offensive as they seem to lack compassion.  But they are using sarcasm so they should not be taken too seriously.

Firing back is Emerging Grace, with some very gracious clarifications.  Now, there are some Emerging folks who would have been less charitable.  I was quite impressed with this response.

For those of you who are wondering, I am a bit ambivalent to the whole Emerging Conversation...my brief thoughts are on my Jacob's Well site...so to be honest, I appreciated something from both sets of posters.

Dearly Beloved We Are Gathered Here Today

DateJune 27, 2007
Comments7 Comments

I have been doing so many weddings this year and really enjoying the rich symbolism of Christian marriage.  Then I thought to myself the other day: what could a thoroughly consistent, 100% naturalistic, Darwinian wedding service sound like? So I figured I would humor myself and have a little fun.

The high priest of unbelief, the Right Reverend Richard Dawkins presiding of course.  You may be seated.

Specialized hominids, we are gathered here today to observe a socially evolved meme of pair bonding among of our species.  The years of mutation and selection have given us the general wisdom that pair-bonded members of our clans represent a successful evolutionary social adaptation for the rearing of our progeny.

Our selfish genes move us to appreciate these occasions as we feel the safety coming from young offspring which will care for us and protect us from predators in our old age.

Even though we now deny the wisdom of eons of evolution that taught us that monogamous pair-bonding is the best way, we now know that we do not need such arrangements in our enlightened age.  We should do away with this oppressive institution (which evolutionary ethics developed as good) and reinvent a better way with our own individual wisdom.

In fact, if mates of the same sex desire to pair-bond, we affirm this fully - for the evolved consensus of prior ethics must be wrong.  A less adaptable meme which must die. We love to base our cherished institutions on evolutionary ethical theory - but then again we can reject them any time we want.

In fact, I'm not really sure what we are here for, but these two hominids desire to participate in this antiquated social arrangement.  So we are happy and we celebrate this with them.  May they be happy and be fruitful and multiply fit progeny - but only if they want to, and if it doesn't take too many resources from their lifestyle, and if we all agree we are not overpopulating the planet.  On second thought, they better not breed.

So I suppose we have an occasion today to have a party and our genes desire it - perhaps it will lead to more pair-bonding - who knows why, but we can do this again until we lose the will to exist.  Then we will allow the religious meme to dominant once again - for those mastered by this persistent idea have many more offspring than we.

What our genes have deemed for today, let no one separate - in the name of quantum fluctuations, spontaneous generation, and self-replicating systems, Amen.

The newly bonded couple now invites you to their open bar to get really drunk with them.  Thank you for coming.

Personally, I still think the beauty of Christian marriage is much more inspiring...

The Microsoft guys are getting a bit funny in poking fun at the iPhone...

For those Apple people who love to bash on Microsoft...check out their fiscal 2007 profits

From the Yahoo Biz article:

I have written extensively about Microsoft's problems. But last week, I got a stunning reminder about the company's power. It takes Microsoft only 10 hours of business to exceed Red Hat's entire quarterly profit. Skeptical? Check out the math, and nine other facts about Microsoft's most recent earnings report. Microsoft last week announced quarterly revenue of $14.4 billion and net income of $4.93 billion. In other words, Microsoft's daily net income is about $55 million. That's $55 million in pure profit every 24 hours. Do some quick math and you'll learn it takes Microsoft only about ...

  • 10 hours or so (yes, hours!) to exceed Red Hat's (NYSE: RHT - News) quarterly net income of $20.5 million.
  • four days to exceed Research In Motion's (NasdaqGS: RIMM) quarterly net income of $187.9 million.
  • four days to exceed Starbucks' (NasdaqGS: SBUX) quarterly net income of $205 million.
  • one week to exceed Nike's (NYSE: NKE - News) quarterly net income of $350.8 million.
  • two weeks to exceed McDonalds' (NYSE: MCD - News) quarterly net income of $762 million.
  • two weeks to exceed Apple's (NasdaqGS: AAPL) quarterly net income of $770 million.
  • 18 days to exceed Google's (NasdaqGS: GOOG) quarterly net income of $1 billion.
  • 23 days to exceed Coca-Cola's (NYSE: KO - News) quarterly net income of $1.26 billion.
  • five weeks to exceed IBM's (NYSE: IBM - News) quarterly net income of $1.85 billion.
  • 10 weeks to exceed Wal-Mart's (NYSE: WMT - News) quarterly net income of $3.9 billion.

That is a lot of cheese coming from the big ugly Washington company. Personally, I have become such an Office 07 fanboy, that I actually like Microsoft again.

Theistic Battle Royal

DateMay 08, 2007

When one thinks of the great debates in Western culture about the existence of God, perhaps Copleston and Bertrand Russell's 1948 debate might come to mind. Even the more recent tussles between William Lane Craig and his interlocutors perhaps. Yet recently, two additional titans of philsophical prowess took to the playing field last night.

Here is the description from the New York Times:

You could tell from the background music that played beforehand – alternating recordings of James Brown and Gregorian chant – that this was going to be an unusual debate.

The question under debate (“Is God great?”) and the speakers — two men who are often depicted in harsh caricatures by their critics — might have caused some to expect something like a circus. Perhaps surprisingly, it turned out to be the public intellectual event of the evening, a bit like Bertrand Russell vs. C. S. Lewis.

Taking the atheist position was Christopher Hitchens, the journalist and author of a new book arguing that “religion poisons everything.” In defense of God was none other than the Rev. Al Sharpton, a man of the cloth who is perhaps even better known for his political and civil rights activism than for his training as a preacher.

A very strange and interesting reading can be found over at the Times. Though I prefer CS Lewis' moral argument, Rev Al seemed to try and make an argument for theism from the existence of moral values.  Go get em AL! But just in case anyone is wondering if the Reverend is a Christian, you can read this quote and decide for yourself.

I would say that many people, I among them, in our own lives have had experiences that make me believe that there is a God. And make me believe that my seeking God and seeking the guidance of a supreme being is real to me. I’m not going by Moses, I’m not going by Peter, I’m not going by the man that you said was a legend, Jesus of Nazareth. … I’m not here to defend Scriptures. I didn’t write those Scriptures. I live my life, and in my life the existence of God has been confirmed to me in my own personal dealings and in my own faith being vindicated and validated. That has absolutely nothing to do with Scriptures, whether they are right or wrong.

One final note and comment on this battle of philosophical and theological giants. Hitchens seemed to offer a very accurate statement in the following:

Mr. Hitchens added, “I didn’t say that God was misused. I said that the idea of God is a dictatorial one to begin with. A belief in a supreme, eternal, invigilating creator who knows what you think and do and cares about you, watches over you while you sleep … is an innately horrific belief.”

One hears his thinking that "belief in God's wrath/hell is horrific" but it is interesting that he finds God's omniscience and omnipresence "innately horrific."  In fact, if we are sinners in need of God's grace his statement is very accurate.  Indeed, if God does see the mind and hearts of people, it is a horrific thing to see ourselves in light of God's holiness and justice.  A word from Hebrews 4 is needed:

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Thankful to Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come...to use Rev Sharpton's own words.  I do want to "go by Jesus of Nazareth" - for in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

I like Red Bull and Rock Star - Who Knew there was a Faith Based Alternative?

1in3Trinity Launches First
Faith Inspired Energy Drink

1in3Trinity brings a bold attitude to an existing market encouraging everyone who purchases their products to live out their faith.

Southlake, TEXAS—September 1, 2006, Faith-inspired company, 1in3Trinity is proud to announce their latest product extension to their signature, branded line of Christian clothing and accessories.  In response to a growing market, 1in3Trinity has launched the first faith-based energy drink under the label 1in3Trinity Energy Drink.

“We are hopeful that 1in3Trinity will change the energy drink landscape,” says Dawn Pencil Marzka, Director of Business Development. “Not only are we offering a great tasting beverage, but an opportunity for the consumer to extend a positive message into the community. We really feel that 1in3Trinity energy drink offers positive energy with every sip!”

The premier 1in3Trinity Energy Drink is a perfect companion for today’s active Christian lifestyle, providing benefits not only for the consumer, but for spectators as well.  In an eye-catching aluminum can, the company has an opportunity to convey a positive and unique message in an innovative and distinctive way to not only the drinker, but also to those in which they come in contact. Each drink carries a full-bodied taste with an essence of pomegranate and grape. Lightly carbonated, with only 10 calories and an array of B vitamins and vitamin C, 1in3Trinity Energy Drink is sure to be one of most refreshing energy drink on the shelves – literally!

”We now have an opportunity to reach one of the largest generations to hit the marketplace since the Baby Boomers – Generation X and Y - with dynamic products and a value-added message,” shares President and Co-Founder, Paula Masters. “Studies show there lies a shift in values on the part of these new discerning consumers. Today’s young market is making it clear to companies hoping to win their hearts that they will have to learn and think like they do, understanding that faith-based values carry great importance to this civic-minded consumer,” says Masters.

1in3Trinity has a strong vision and is committed to contributing a percentage of our profits to youth ministries around the world.

1in3Trinity energy drink will soon be available in select convenience stores, retailers and coffee Café’s, but is currently available on the companies own website.

Lower calories than Rock Star as well. But I like Rock Star...am I am sinner if I do not choose the 1in3Trinity energy drink? But I really don't know what to make of this line: "We really feel that 1in3Trinity energy drink offers positive energy with every sip!" I am tempted to mock this so I will close this post.

Apparently Intuit has a TurboTax Tax Rap Contest going on over at YouTube.  Two of my friends have, in my opinion, put out an excellent candidate.  So check it out and then use the link below to vote for Rhett and Link.

Who says modern folks don't have faith...

Apparently there is some faith left on the Island of Britain.  This story over at the Register recounts a British women's overly optomistic following of a GPS system in here Mercedes.  Where did that silky "turn right here" voice land here?  Not on Terra Firma.  She ended up doing her best James Bond Submarine car impersonation and floated down the river a bit.

Trust in GPS and lean not on your own understanding...

Are You Stupid?

StupidTester.com says I'm 13% Stupid! How stupid are you? Click Here!

Just for fun - go and take the Stupid Test.  Fun little test, the only drawback is I did not get to see which ones I missed. Plus, there is one question that is quite debatable today, but I won't tell which one.

Here are my results which I said in the test I would display whether I came out stupid or smart:

Overall, you scored as follows:

84% scored higher (more stupid),
3% scored the same, and
13% scored lower (less stupid).

You are 13% stupid. This means...

You are far from stupid. Congrats on a great accomplishment!

Ego intact...but reminded that there are many, many people who are much more smarter than me.  "More smarter" - proof right there.

Music shapes so much of our lives, as does film in our days. This semester we just began a teaching series entitled "Lessons from the Old School: The Prophecy of Habakkuk" - To have a bit of fun with the "Old School" we tracked through TV/Film/Music of the last 30-40 years.  For those of you who were born in the seventies and grew up in the eighties, this is a fun 1 min trip down memory lane. Here is the video from YouTube.

Now for all of you Indie rockers don't complain that this is all mainstream music - we wanted the stuff from previous decades to be recognizable to all...but if you must you can watch it and then go rage against "labels" and "the man"

This is one big fish caught off of the coast of China recently...measured 2.4 meters and 340 KG (American peoples, a good exercise in unit conversion to figure out the lbs and feet of this guy).  This probably gives Jonah hot flashes...

Creativity in Physics

As one who studied physics as an undergraduate, I found this to be much more creative than the stuff I used to scribble down.  I'm glad to see that creativity still earns no points in science...but it does bring some laughs.

I don't know why I find these funny...

I encourage folks often, in following John Piper, to "Not Waste Their Lives" - but I don't think that means we can't laugh a little.  To be honest this is just a goofy web site, but pretty impressive promotional material for a blender.

So, don't get hooked in watching too many of these, but maybe a couple just for laughs.  My favorite was the Hockey Pucks - Here is the site: Will it Blend?

And kids, we need to listen and "don't try this at home"

Chicken Resurrections...well, not really

Now this may just freak some people out: "Zombie chickens" hatch debate over older chickens' fate

Apparently when hens which are farmed for laying eggs get too old to produce those over easy specialties, they are euthanized in the following fashion:

To kill the chickens, farmers suffocate them in sealed boxes filled with carbon dioxide, a practice that has drawn the ire of animal rights groups. Afterward, the hens are layered in mounds of sawdust.

After being buried, some of the chickens "woke up" and started running around.  Besides freaking people out (think Pet Seminary) apparently there is some debate about what to do with the birds.  I am guessing the animal rights crowd might want a nursing home for the chickens, but the old school guy in me just says to keep them in the box longer.

But it looks like the "zombie chickens" have to wait awile before than can become something useful - like fuel.

A new European technology that turns dead cows into fuel to generate electricity -- and that could be the fate of spent hens someday, said Rich Matteis, head of the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association.

But ``that's not something that's going to be available anytime soon,'' he said.

Giving animal rights groups a cause for today.  Thanks to the chickens that ain't going down for nobody.

Good news for the UNC Football Program. When I was in school we were good at both football and basketball...then Mack Brown went to Texas. With Butch Davis hired - the future may look a bit brighter for the baby blue gridiron boys.

I was on staff with Athletes in Action at Virginia Tech when Davis brought the Miami Hurricanes out of a period of probation and back to national prominence.  Maybe he can help the 1-9 Tar Heels.  I'll have to get used to cheering for coach Davis after years of cheering against him as a Hokie!

My decision is not usually this complicated...but I thought this graphic was funny.  A friend sent it to me; I'm not sure where he gleaned this little masterpiece. I lean towards the old quote by Erasmus as well -“When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes.”
