Mary of Magdala

This morning at Fellowship Bible Church in Murfreesboro, TN I had the privilege of speakng about the biblical Mary Magdalene.  With so much confusion, speculation, and outright nonsense being taught today about Mary of Magdala, I was encouraged by the opportunity to share about this great woman of faith.  It has been a rich study looking at one of Jesus' disciples, the first evangelist who brought the good news of the resurrection to the rest of the disciples.  I pray the message might be an encouragement to you as you serve the Jesus who loved, forgave, established and called Mary to himself.  Not to be his wife...but to be her Lord and God.

The Blog Has Been Slow

It has been tough for me to post with vigor these days - I have been reading, writing, speaking so much that I have been a bit exhausted and left with less to blog from the soul.

I have been studying and reading early church history, the Da Vinci code stuff, and speaking in several different venues.  A two parter here at our church on Sunday mornings on engaging culture and understanding the contemporary buzz about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Gnostic Gospels and the like.

I hope to get back to some biblical and cultural reflections here on the blog quite soon...

Just recently  Inversion was involved in leading a kids club in downtown Nashville. Expect a fun video of that here soon as well. For all the friends out there - please pray for me as I am in the midst of a full season of life. Great family, little boy coming, a wife to serve and life, many opportunities to share with the world about the living Jesus, inner city work, budgets, plans, NFL camps this summer, a trip to Peru, pre marital counseling, weddings, and a desire to read, pray and be alone a few minutes each day...

Out for now - speaking tonight on "Calling" - should be fun!

Why we have families...

One of the most intense blessings, source of relational pain, great joys, deep sorrows, and everything in between is found in our families.  Today you hear much about family values, alternative families, nuclear families, many ways of being a family, God's blueprint for families etc.

Family is a big deal - I want to put forth a question that all of us should ask more often.  Why?  Why is family a big deal.  Any answer will be like a multifaceted geme stone.  A jewel that can be seen and enjoyed from several angles.  I want to offer a few reasons why family is, and will always be a big deal

  • Family is where we are born and nurtured.  Much can be said about the importance of our formative years.  The development of our souls and bodies takes place in a context.  We grow memories, behavioral patterns, mental capacities, social skills, in the incubator which is our youth.  The family environment can be a great blessing or a great burden on our growth.  We pick up wounds, scars, and all sorts of junk in our family.  We never will "get it right" in our families - but can they be a place of grace, blessing, forgiveness, understanding, and healthy growth.  By the goodness of God, this can be true.  Family is a big deal because the family grows people - for good or for ill.
  • Families are where we learn to love and forgive.  When you have multiple sinners growing up under a roof, toes will be stepped on and people misunderstood.  Well, to be honest, sometimes we just crush each other.  Family is a place where we learn to say, I forgive you.  A place where we learn to live for someone else.  Where God can begin to slay selfishness in the soul teaching us to give our lives in service.  Family is where we can learn to the truth of the great secrets of the Kingdom of God - that to be first is to be last and to be last is first.  We learn the joy of really seeing and savoring what God desires us to know - it is better to give than to receive.
  • Families are where we learn to use our gifts.  Every can contribute something to the mission of a family.  When fathers and mothers see their roles as facilitating a mission under the leadership of Christ, kids as well as the grown folks, can begin to see how their uniqueness, passions, and giftings contribute to a whole.  Parents, we need to high five and chest bump our kids as they serve in their unique design.  They need to have coaches that both affirm, instruct and offer discipline.  Why?  Our families can count for something in the world if we see them as missional formations sent into the world, with the church, to transform lives and culture to the glory of God.
  • Finally, and most importantly, the reason family exists at all is so that we might see and savor God himself.  Think about it.  We reproduce sexually, but there are other ways to reproduce.  Think about it.  Other animals come right out into the world and get right into life...people are dependent and need each other for quite a long time.  It seems that God desired human beings to have fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers.  Why?  To help us understand good theology.

    • First - God is our Father, the unique Savior of humanity is a Son, and these relate in intimate communion and fellowship with the Spirit within the eternal Trinity.  A loving, self giving community of persons is our God - our families have a great model to follow.  The Father loves the Son, the Son submits, without being inferior to the Father.  The Spirit is sent forth into the world by Father and Son (no debate please) to bring glory to the Son who makes the Father known.  Selfless service, roles, and beauty...a great model.
    • Second - the image of God is seen in the world through "male and female" - God the Father is not a man, he is a spiritual being that is reflected in the feminine and the masculine.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27. Why are there males and females, boys and girls, men and women.  To reflect the image of God.  Why is God called Father and not Mother - because there is something about "Father" that he wants the men to understand...plus, he reveals himself to us as such.  Much more needs to be written here.
    • Third- The church uses the analogies of family to describe relationships within the people of God.  Who are we as Christians?  We are brothers and sisters in Christ.  We understand the church as a family called out of the world to the Triune God.
    • Fourth- the nature of teaching, discipleship and Christian care for others uses the language of family.  Paul uses this language extensively in his first letter to the Thessalonians.

For all the family guys our there - don't let the constant responsibilities weigh on you as undesired burdens.  Rather, see the loads you carry as a beautiful expression of the person of God, in and through your little flock, loving them and nurturing them along the road.

To all the young dudes out there who bear the calling of pastor.  Let us look to Paul's family example as we love the lost, care for the sheep, and lead them in mission.

1 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (ESV)

1For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain. 2But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. 3For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, 4but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. 5For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. 6Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. 7But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. 8So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

9For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 10You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. 11For you know how, like a father with his children, 12we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

God Bless the families, the marriages, the husbands, the Dads, the wives, the Moms, and the kids...there is something good going on amidst all the drama we know as family.

The Problem of Goodness - Rejoicing in a Kind Providence

Many an atheist has shaken a loaded fist towards the heavens about the problem of evil.  God, how could you allow such suffering in this world if you are good and powerful?  In moments of existential angst, many attempt to deny God's existence while railing againsts this same "non existant" being. Yet the problem assumes a real distinction between "good" and "evil" as many have pointed out.

Though many are quick to ask "why evil" not as many are as quick to ask "why all the goodness?"  I have asked myself this question today.

Over the years my wife and I have experienced six miscarriages; five before we had any children at all.  After the first few I asked myself the question: Is God good and satisfying even if he does not give us children?  By his grace I was able to answer a resounding yes!  Then, for reasons of God's choosing, we had two beautiful little girls; Kayla and then Kylene.

A few months ago we found out that  we were pregnant with baby #3.  We cautiously rejoiced and taught our oldest (Kayla, 4) that some babies make it to this world while others do not; we need to pray and hope this one will make it.  So I asked myself one more question: Is God good and satisfying even if he does not give me a son, and fills my house with an all female squad?  By grace, I was able to answer with a resounding yes!  Then today, for reasons of God's choosing, we saw some amazing pictures on an ultrasound screen.  We are pregnant with a little boy, man, wrestler (if he wants)...son.  Why? I don't know.  But I sensed and rejoiced with joy unspeakable today.  Not so much that I am having a boy.  But more that God would give us this gift.  I did not need it, I did not really ask for it as much as one would think (though I did pray here and there), I only know that I was so overwhelmed and touched deep in the gut with joy today...at the goodness of God.

Why would he be so good to us?  I don't know.  He is who he is.  There is a problem of goodness.  Joys unexplained and gifts so rich; we dare not miss them because of our travails.

O to the Gracious Father of Lights
From Whom Every Good Gifts Comes
Give Grace and Peace to Receive Thy Joy
From Thy Divine Benevolent Love.

Favorite Podcasts

Podcasting has really changed my life. Really. I know that sounds cheesy and a bit of an overstatement but I have been greatly encouraged by great audio content over the last several months that I don't feel weird saying that. Driving back and forth to my office and around town to meet with people affords some time in the car. What better time to fill the mind with some edifying stuff...or at least some fun stuff. The more I have listened to good content from podcasts, I have found I listen to thinks like "talk radio" much less often. The stuff on talk radio really can be filled with such vitriol and guile that it bums you out and just can make put you in a funky state of mind. The effect of talk radio (left wing or right wing) on the soul will be saved for perhaps another post.

In all seriousness though, I thought I would share a few of the podcasts that build up my life. For those who are new to podcasts, I'll include an intro at the end of the is post.

Desiring God Radio - This is the radio broadcast of Desiring God Ministries featuring the biblical teaching of John Piper. It comes in 25 minute segments so you can chew reasonable sized bytes (sorry for the pun). The teaching of Piper could be described as theological exposition which aims to provoke the mind and the affections towards God. In short - it just fires me up and points me in a godward direction.

Mars Hill Featured Audio - I listen to this for the Film and Theology discussions as well as the weekly teaching of Mark Driscoll. Driscoll is a bit abrasive for some but I really enjoy his mixture of humor, theologically driven messages, and a nack for communicating to our generation. Current series is entitled Christians Gone Wild: 1 Corinthians. The messages are usually about an hour.

This Week in Tech - This is one of the most popular podcasts out there. This is basically a bunch of techno geeks and tech journalists talking about all things geeky. The show consists of news, commentary, banter, humor and cool stuff coming out in tech world. Being one who has some past education in Computer Science this makes me feel still part of the club. Even though for the most part I am now a wanna be geek. Shows are about an hour each week.

Stand to Reason  - STR just entered the podcasting world but has quickly picked up a good following. Last week they had climbed to #1 in the religious/spirituality category in the iTunes Podcast directory. The show is a big two hours long and contains the audio from Greg Koukl's weekly call in show. For those interested in discussions of ethics, theology, philosophy, culture and apologetics, add this to your queue.

Now for the newbies. The following was written by my friend Neal Joseph and tweaked by yours truly. I think it is a good overview for non techie people who are new to podcasts.

What Is a Podcast?

A podcast is a subscription format designed to deliver audio or video content directly to your computer. The advantage to podcasting is that you don't need to remember to go back download the newest media from your favorite online source. Once you subscribe to the podcast it will automatically update new content to your reader as it becomes available. The readers are usually free or low cost. The most common podcasts deliver audio files in the MP3 format, syndicated through an RSS (XML) file. Other formats and other types of files, such as video, are increasingly being podcasted. The content is downloaded to your PC, Mac or mobile device. It's not streamed, so you can access the content whenever you want. You may subscribe to podcast feeds by using a Podcast client program. Once it is installed on your local computer, the program will regularly check for and automatically download the new audio content to which you have subscribed. Any computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts. You can also download the mp3 files to any portable mp3 player to take it with you.

Finally, here are the URL's for the Podcasts from Fellowship Bible Church, where I serve:

Depression and Despondency - How do you struggle?

The last several days I have been in a real fog.  I think this is a very important part of God's providence for us, that we learn to hold to his hand in the midst of our own dark days.  I wanted to ask everyone a question:

When you are depressed, how do you wrestle with it and what sort of things have you found good for the soul?

For me, reading (particularly the Scriptures), exercise and sleep are usually the paths which help me find hope in God...but the last three days I have slept very poorly, not read much, and not exercised a lick.  I think this contributes to an overall low state of the soul.   Thoughts about the unity and interconnectedness of body and soul come quickly to mind.  I also find the dark night of the soul to be accompanied by temptations of a more intense variety.  In the midst of the fog, I always try to remember that the sun's existence is warming and giving energy to the earth, even when veiled.  So in the days where the warmth of the rays of the beauty of God feel far from me, I am reminded by the eyes of faith that he is still upholding all things and bringing all about for the good of his people - even using despondent days.

I would love your thoughts.

A Protest in Favor of Books

Many times over the last ten years of Christian ministry I have interacted with this generation over the topic everyone loves today.  Reading.  In 2000, one young man who went with me to Eastern Europe said:

I don't like reading, becasue that would involve...well, reading.

With a generation coming up that is saturated with media, ingnorant of their own history (both the evil and the good chapters), oblivious to our intellectual heritage, and generally resistance to turning a page, I have made it a prayer and calling to encourage others to read.  I wanted to take just a moment and share why I feel reading is so important.  Important today, in the 21st century.

Reading Slows and Quiets the Soul

The pace our our generation is one on the move.  We hop from website (or in my case blog to blog), we surf channels, we function with background music in just about everything we do, we have our own headphones, little kids have little DVD players for the back seat of the car. See this article on the MediaWise Web Site for good reasons to slow down the torrent of media.

And then, we try to read a book.  We try to read the Bible.  Oh, how we need to turn off, slow down, pause, remove the noise and train ourselves to read.  I know the pace of my soul greatly changes when I linger in the Scriptures or a good book. Our brains function differently when reading, and the soul may pause before God.  I believe the quietness of reading the Scriptures to be one of the reasons God gave us a book.  To speak to us - to have us be still and know he is God.

Reading Keeps a Mind Sharp and Helps us to Learn how to Think Critically

The ability to construct an argument, to connect thoughts in an order, to persuade, to filter all we hear is a skill which is being lost upon a generation.  Reading and following a train of thought can be difficult to do with information flying around us in short sound bites.  Reading allows us to follow along with someone who is attempting to make a point; it helps us see when someone makes mistakes or fails to make her case.  Reading just makes better thinkers.  Some basic understanding of logic (I know there are logic haters abounding today as well) doesn't hurt either.

A Fight for Language and Its Artful Use

Language is a gift from a speaking God.  We use language because God has given it to us.  God himself speaks, so of all people, we ought value language highly.   Language has taken a beating over the years, be it from Wittgenstein or Derrida.  Yet, it is still the only tool we have.  Many are keen to quote the research that 90% of communication is non-verbal.  I always find this statistic strange.   I believe it accurate - with body language, posture, facial expression, and tone being indespensible for good communication.  But that 10% seems to be the most important in the process.  I can get by with gestures, facial contortions, but combine all thes with words I think the communication is much more complete.  Clear and artful writing needs CPR, no it needs a kiss from God.  May we ever take seriously the words we write and read - yes, even in e-mail.

As a Protest in a Distracted Age

John Piper recently remarked that our age is one which is running to alternative forms of communication (video, etc) and telling a generation that it needs to be spoken to in pictures rather than words.  He encouraged all the young people, when they hear this sort of thing, to stand up in protest and say "I'm going to the Library."  I agree.  Young people, reject the patronizing nonsense that you are idiots who cannot tackle a book.  Challenge that in yourself, grab a dictionary, grab a friend who wants to change.  Have reading hour in protest of those who would belittle your intellect.

Making friends with others from a different age

In his introduction to Athanasius' work On the Incarnation, CS Leiws exhorted us in his work On the Incarnation:

The only safety is to have a standard of plain, central Christianity ("mere Christianity" as Baxter called it) which puts the controversies of the moment in their proper perspective. Such a standard can be acquired only from the old books. It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. If that is too much for you, you should at least read one old one to every three new ones.

Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books.

One of the great blessing is to walk with the great minds of the past.  I have been so encouraged and blessed by reading Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas.  I have been brought up into heavenly visions reading Owen, Bunyan, Edwards, and the letters of Spurgeon.  Breathing air from different ages is a pleasant undertaking; don't miss the fresh breezes of history by always chewing on the spirit of the age.

Not being led and held captive by "They"

In the 1997 space alien comedy Men in Black (Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith) Agent Kay (Jones' character) makes the following statement:

You will dress only in attire specially sanctioned by M.I.B. special services. You'll conform to the identity we give you. Eat where we tell you. Live where we tell you. From now on, you'll have no identifying marks of any kind. You will not stand out in any way. Your entire image is crafted to leave no lasting memory with anyone you encounter. You are a rumor, recognizable only as deja vu, and dismissed just as quickly. You don't exist. You were never even born. Anonymity is your name, silence is your native tongue. You are no longer part of the system. You are above the system, over it, beyond it. We're "them." We're "they." We are the Men in Black.

Too funny! But there is a truth we must get to as well.  Our culture is so addicted to "they say this, they say that."  If "they" say something why does this make it true?  We need to ask who "they" are - then read what they say.  We are all too believing at times of the experts, we must learn to understand what they say and whether it is so.  The Bereans could teach us much in our day

Communion with God

Finally, and most importantly, we read to have communion with God.  His words must guide us, his truth most be upon us.  God has given testimony to himself in many ways; the Scriptures, the Bible, the Good Book, being primary.  The Scriptures testify to us as to the nature and will of God, the nature and mission of Jesus, how to walk these roads with him on our way to the celestial city.  If reading continues to fall out of repute among the people of God, all manner of error, confusion, false teaching, and hell will be unleashed in our midst.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

O Father, have your children drawn to the Scriptures for their lives and communion with you.  And do Lord call us continually to wonderful, God exalting, soul stirring, passion inflaming, service inspiring, suffering sustaining, Christ worshipping books.

Off to Brown University

I am off to Brown University today to speak to a group of college athletes. My topic for the evening is Living as a Christian Athlete in College. Brown has a fairly new Athletes in Action ministry which has been a privilege to connect with. I was able to speak there in November and I am looking forwarding to seeing the crew again.

ESV Bible Blog » How Medium Affects Message

As a user of Bible Sofware (yes, Logos - silver-scholar), my iPod for listening to the Bible (ESV, Max Mclean) this little post was of some interest to me. How Medium Affects Message Here is how I use the various means of letting the word of Christ dwell richly in my life...well, sometimes poorly.
  • Memory - I use audio Bible in my car, text on my iPod screen, and primarily my leather Bible - I tend to see things and memorize them, so I have to see it in a text to help me memorize.
  • Study - I begin with my print Bible, do much of my book work on Logos (commentaries, dictionaries, language study, etc.) - I like to allow myself time to "get lost in Logos" going from resource to resource looking at a particular passage
  • Message Writing - I am evolving here. Before I lived mostly on the computer. Now, I use scraps of paper, little notebooks (moleskins), and MS Word. I usually print out outlines from Word, scratch them out with a pen, add stuff, round trip back to word. I use Endnote for all my references as I don't like to write any message without a bibliography and references to those I leaned upon in developing the message (yes, I think plagarism in sermon writing is wrong)
  • Prayer and Journal - I pray without a computer. I scratch prayer requests on paper, yet I do think and write sometimes here on the Blog.
  • Meditation - both with print Bible and with ESV web services on the blog :)
Long live books! Long live printed Bibles! Die Parchment and Papyrus! (at least in every day use - long live them in textual studies) Long Live Logos! Praise God for the Internet! ...

Together for the Gospel

Together for the Gospel is a great blog where four guys interact with others and allow a peak into their reading, devotional, and personal walks with Christ. Here is a sampling from CJ Mahaney on his devotional time in the morning.
"2) Describe your present practice of the spiritual disciplines. This wonderful means of grace normally takes place at the beginning of the day for approximately 1 hour. I agree with George Mueller’s approach to this important practice, “…that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord.” And there is no more effective way to cultivate happiness of soul than to preach the gospel to myself. So my morning spiritual diet normally involves surveying the wondrous Cross on which the Prince of Glory died. John Stott wrote, “The Cross is a blazing fire at which the flame of our love is kindled, but we have to get near enough for its sparks to fall on us.” So each morning I want to get near enough to the Cross so these transforming sparks will fall on my soul leaving me freshly amazed by grace and full of affection for the God of all grace. At present I am making my way slowly through The Gospel of Mark. I read and reflect on just a few verses each day. And I am studying Mark’s gospel with the help of James Edwards commentary The Gospel According to Mark and The Cross from a Distance; Atonement in Mark’s Gospel by Peter Bolt. By God’s grace sparks are falling on my soul."
Encouraging stuff... ...

The Way of a Pastor

I have been thinking much about the essence of pastoral leadership in these days. In fact, my taste for the word "leadership" is not too robust - I think I prefer the term Sherpherd. The greek words used in the New Testament which describe church leaders are "presbuteros" or elder - connotating one with wisdom and grace to serve his people. "Episkopos" or overseer, one who must look after the flock and give an account. And finally, "poimen" or pastoring which describes the task of the elder/overseer. Leader is altogether missing albeit the biblical call upon men who are elders involves many things we modern folk would lump under the category of "leadership." In pondering this question I have been reading the Scripture, looking at the nature of the calling to ministry. First, we are definitely not qualified - none of us...we are only sufficient for the calling if he makes us competent to be ministers (See 2 Cor 3-4). In these wonderings about "ministry" I have also run into a letter written by a young Charles Haddon Spurgeon - one who would be called to be a pastor. He wrote the following:
I dread lest sloth or pride should overcome me, and I should dishonour the gospel by lack of prayer, or the Scriptures, or by sinning against God. Letters of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Selected with Notes by Iain Murray, (Carlisle: Banner of Truth Trust, 1992) 20.
Here is the heart of a Pastor who has seen his calling from the Scriptures... First, he writes I dread - O how we do not dread that our souls would fall away from the life giving streams of communion with Christ. The great enemies on two ends of the spectrum of minstry death should be dread in the life of a pastor. I fear I become lazy and dishonor my high calling; I fear I become proud and dishonor God. A forgiven person should never be proud and arrogant about the gospel of grace. I wrestle with and pray against both of these devils - slouching towards cold, flatline religion, and rising in my own mind to high pharisaical pride which binds fast a man in dead, lifeless, legalism. These two will overcome any man in pastoral ministry - they will floud him with idle thoughts and allow the heart to contemplate sin. Or they will make one think they are immune to the crumbling world around them. We must give great care and dread towards both sloth and pride. He then says we can dishonour the gospel - the great truth of God reconciling the world through Christ by amazing grace, by being prayerless and being far from the Scriptures. Lack of prayer shows that we do not feel a need upon our lives for God. That we can serve in the flesh and do things, holy and weighty things, in our own flesh. A flesh that is exceedingly lacking for the call and paths that wait upon the man of God. A man without the Scriptures shows he chooses to live off of his own thoughts, his entertainments, the words of women and men, rather than the words of God. Oh how many of us today live of the chirpping words of others and give great neglect to the words of God. How many belittle the spiritual impact of the Bible and give themselves to techniques and worldly counsel to give life to the soul. Sin - we all wrestle, no fight daily its summons. Come away with me for relief from the is walk of faith. Give way to this - it is your natural desire. Stoop down and cup your hands in the lakes of passion, resistance is futile - join the throng. The apostle describe faith as "FIGHT!" we must fight for our lives. We must beat back the slough of sloth, punish the pretense of pride, refuse to parade in prayerlessness and sip the nectar of the Scripture - or we will die. We will be washed away by the torrents of the times, by the world, the flesh, and the devil. Yet there is another path - and I seek it. Though I walk in the shadow of the greatest enemy; life does call and beckon from one greater. Do not walk in that way, do not give a step towards death - but rather - remain dilligent, humble, pray, search and eat from the living Word, and cling fast to Christ as if life depends upon him alone...for it most certainly does.
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
Grace and labors, labors and grace...such is the path, one not without the other yet grace must reign as the dust labors. ...

Conference Lust Part Deux

Earlier, I Repented of Conference Lust... During this one I am not preaching the gospel in Peru - so maybe...God willing...if my wife will let me...if I can get some cool brothers to go with... I just may have to make this trek in Sept 06 - The DG National Conference In all seriousness - I think this conference is a vital gathering of church leaders around a very important issue for our generation. It seems the gathering of men are theologians, pastors and evangelists dedicated to some very important things:
  1. Connecting and Communicating the gospel in every age, to every culture
  2. Going to cities and cultural centers to do so
  3. Holding to Truth and not allowing one culture (in our case emerging western postmodern culture) to subvert and reign over the Gospel.
So, missional faith, sound doctrine, culturally immersed and relevant, for all peoples - O Lord God you have this path set forth in the wilderness of our times. Keep our feet fast to these paths and holding forth and holding fast your Word. Relativistic epistemologies and compromised preaching - away with thy bidding! May love of neighbors and cultures be in our souls and above all earthly powers...may Christ be all. ...

This morning at the Pastor's conference we heard from Michael Campbell of Redeemer Presbyterian in Jackson, MS. A multi-ethnic Christian community dedicated to the gospel. Passionate and uplifting, convicting and encouraging, provoking both prophetic discontent and blow stuff up and change zeal. A few highlights:
A church that does not see the influence of culture, black or white, in their church is probably enslaved to it There are two enemies to the multi-ethnic church:
  1. The Church Growth give people what they like and want paradigm
  2. The Pluralism Pardigm that exalts ones culture over the gospel
When the neighborhood changes, DON'T LEAVE!!! and run to the part of town that still looks like you
I highly suggest getting this message "The Multi-Ethnic Church" once it is out on MP3. A passionate pastoral plea to live the gospel with all peoples, now...not just in eternity.

What to go over with a twelve year old...

Fathers, to arms!!! This post over at Girl Talk is a great insight into the kind of devotional one can live with and for your children. This is a discussion from one of CJ Mahaney's daughters as to how her Father is walking with Chad - the twelve year old boy of the family. This quote is insightful:

As Dad puts it, his primary goal with Chad--apart from helping him develop a disciplined habit of meeting with God--is to provide him with cross-centered content that equips him to discern and weaken sin, grow in godliness, and apply truth to his life.

Dad opens their times in prayer, and they conclude by taking turns praying: for God's help to apply the material and specific requests to God on each other's behalf. "I think it's important for Chad to hear me pray and benefit from my prayers," Dad says. "Spurgeon was deeply affected by hearing his mother pray and I want to be an example for my son." Dad also likes to hear Chad pray as it gives him an opportunity to evaluate his heart. In addition to prayer, Dad leads Chad in a discussion, but their times don't merely include instruction. Dad also seeks to model humility by informing Chad of his own sin, and how he is seeking to attack it, and grow in godliness. In addition to daily Scripture reading, Dad and Chad have covered a variety of topics over the past six months, using sound theological materials, and beginning with portions from Knowing God by J.I. Packer and The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul.
It is awesome to see an encouragement to walk with your kids in such a manner. I know many Christians who never have read such meat - and this with a 12 year old. I say it all depends what we start our kids on. What sort of stuff we read will make an impression on them. If we want to them to have fluffy Christianity that blows in the winds of the slightest suffering we ought to say "they are young, they will think this is boring, they won't find it fun to ask hard questions, to wrestle with theology, handle well teh Scriptures, or read sturdy books" And such they will be. Yet, it is such a refreshing thing to see, a twelve your old reading Knowing God. Fathers, call them up, love them, laugh with them, spend the time to plant the truth deeply in tiny souls. Though my efforts ultimately depend on the gracious work of God in the life of my kids, Mahaney's example calls me to press on, excel still more, bring them up in the fear and instruction of the Lord. My four year old has a special "theology library" we have started on a small book shelf. It is a special library - one that has her Catechism, the ABCs of God, Four Volumes of Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers , and her ESV Children's Bible. She knows that this is a special shelf, one where the books will be added slowly and intentionally. I pray some day it will be full. Full of all manner of depth and joy and grace and truth and practical wisdom found from drinking from fountains that are deep. Parents, yes even the guys, Girl Talk is a good place to visit... ...

My house is always clean...

My wife just read my last post about "entropy" and "working around the house" - Just to make sure :) - I wanted all to know that our house is well kept and is not a disaster area. Just like everything and anything else it has to be maintained... Kasey is too funny - she was concerned I was telling the world our place was a dump. It is no such thing - in a world where energy is running down, our house always a place of refuge for me. ...

Repenting of Conference Lust

I want to repent. I am a goofball of a guy. I was sitting here bumming out because I would not be able to go to this conference in May because I will be taking a team to Peru to assist church planting and training Peruvians in Apologetics. Hello, Reid, Hello, knock, knock, Hello!?!!? I'm an idiot... Father, I repent of my selfishness and desire to be at a cool conference rather than rejoicing in your providential appointment to preach your gospel and defend the faith in Peru. May you ever burn in my heart a true heart of a servant. O sick pride be away from me and let me give the life you gave me in the service of your Kingdom on the earth. But if you are just sitting on your butt May 9-11 - register for this and go get equipped for service. Mars Hill Church - Reform & Resurge Conference 2006 ...
